He is a true trail‑blazer of Idoma heritage and a cornerstone of Nigerian academia. Born on 29 January 1947 in Upu, Otukpo LGA, Benue State, he earned a BA (Honours) in English from the University of Ibadan (1966‑1970) before becoming the first Nigerian to secure a PhD in modern drama at the University of Wisconsin, USA (1972‑1976) .
He kicked off his career as a Junior Research Fellow at the Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan, and later joined the University of Jos where he rose to become a full professor of Theatre Arts. At Jos he served as Dean of the Faculty of Arts (twice), Deputy Vice‑Chancellor (Administration) and even spearheaded the American Studies Programme. His scholarly work, especially the “Amalian Two Theories on Cultural Creativity and Change,” is still a reference point for students of drama and cultural studies.
In October 2002, Prof. Amali was appointed Vice‑Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, a role he held until 2007. His tenure is remembered for expanding academic programmes, fostering research excellence and creating a vibrant campus atmosphere. After Ilorin, he served as Vice‑Chancellor of Nasarawa State University, Keffi (2010‑2013).
A prominent and respected bilingual playwright, who writes in Idoma & English languages, Prof. Amali has many acclaimed publications to his name.
This distinguished son of Idoma Land has achieved many firsts in his career:
1. first Nigerian to obtain a PhD in modern drama
2. first Nigerian to become a professor of modern drama
3. first professor of Theatre Arts from northern Nigeria.
4. first professor of Theater Arts to become a Vice-Chancellor in Nigeria.
Prof. Amali has been recognized with awards for his academic achievements as well as his contributions to national development.

4. Committee of Vice-Chancellors’ of Federal Universities Award for Distinguished & Outstanding contributions to the Nigerian Universities and Educational System – 2008.
5. Society of Nigeria Theater Artists (SONTA) Lifetime Achievements- Award – 2010.
Beyond the boardroom, Prof. Amali, who is from a family of professors, has been married to renowned economist, Prof. Mrs. Eberle Amali since 1972 and their marriage is blessed with three children; Musa, Hauwa and Mohammed. His life is a testament to how scholarship, leadership and humility can shape generations.
