In the tapestry of Nigeria’s judicial history, certain appointments represent more than a change of office, they symbolize a breaking of barriers and the fulfillment of long-deferred hopes. The ascension of Honorable Justice Adam Onum (born October 20th, 1953) to become the Chief Judge of Benue State in December 2017 was one such landmark moment. After 41 years of the state’s existence, he became the first person of Idoma ethnic origin to attain this esteemed position.

Education and Early Career
· Higher School Certificate: Government College Keffi (1973-1974)
· Bachelor of Laws (LL.B): University of Lagos (1974-1977)
· Bar Qualification: Nigerian Law School, Lagos (1977-1978)
· Early Roles: Began his career as a Magistrate in Vandeikya (1980-1982) and later co-founded the private practice, Eko & Onum Chambers in Otukpo.
A unique blend of experience unusually for a future Chief Judge, Justice Onum’s career included a significant foray into the political and executive arms of government, giving him a well-rounded perspective on statecraft.
He served as a Member of the Benue State House of Assembly in 1983 and was appointed Solicitor-General (1988) and later Attorney-General & Commissioner for Justice (1989-1991) for Benue State.
He was appointed a Judge of the Benue State High Court in August 1991, where he served with distinction for over 26 years before his elevation to Chief Judge.

The appointment in late 2017 was a significant event, widely covered and celebrated across Nigeria.
A Milestone for the Idoma Nation, The Idoma people, the second-largest ethnic group in Benue State, had long awaited this moment. Before Justice Onum, other qualified Idoma jurists had been overlooked for the position, which was historically held by judges from the Tiv majority. His confirmation by the Benue State House of Assembly was therefore seen as a corrective act of equity, fairness, and justice by Governor Samuel Ortom’s administration.
Outside the courtroom, Justice Adam Onum is a family man and community builder. He is married to Vivian Oyiminu Odangla Onum (since 1978), and they are blessed with children. He has contributed to his community by establishing a commercial secondary school and rebuilding a primary school.
His hobbies include gaming, lawn tennis, and rural community development. He is driven by a commitment to “deciding disputes without fear or favour” and wishes to be remembered for his generosity.
He served as Chief Judge from December 2017 until his retirement in October 2018, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 65.
